John was born in 1855.  John's father was John Calvin Virdin and his mother was Sarah Bewley.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Anderson (Virgin) Virden and Elizabeth Benefield. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henly, William and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
