Henly was born in 1853.  Henly's father was John Calvin Virdin and his mother was Sarah Bewley.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Anderson (Virgin) Virden and Elizabeth Benefield. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, William and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
