James was born in 1863 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  James' father was Francis CROOK and his mother was Hannah RHOADES.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Charles, Frederick, Alfred, Sarah, Elizabeth, Emma, Hannah and Alice.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
