Alfred was born in 1860 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  Alfred's father was Francis CROOK and his mother was Hannah RHOADES.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Charles, Frederick, James, Sarah, Elizabeth, Emma, Hannah and Alice.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
