    More on Old Artillery Ground:
    Old Artillery Ground
    Extends from Middlesex Street south to Spital Square north, east of Bishopsgate Street, outside the eastern boundary of Bishopsgate Ward Without (O.S. 1880).
    The bounds are set out in Letters Patent, Jas. II. , transcribed in Bayley's History of the Tower, II. App. p. cxxi. , and in O. and M. map, 1677, it is shown as an open space called" Old Artillery Garden" and included within the City boundary.
    Stow says that it was used by the Gunners of the Tower every week for artillery practice (S. Ed. 1603, 167-8), and Strype tells us that the ground was let out for this purpose on a long lease by William, the last Prior of St. Mary Spital (Ed. 1720, I. ii. 96).
    According to Stow it was formerly called Tasell close and Tasels planted there for the use of Clothworkers, but afterwards used for archery practice (S. 167-8).
    Archers were forbidden to shoot there 1677 (L. and P. Chas. II. Dom. S. XVIII. p.533).

    Notes to 1891 Census of England and Wales show that Fort St. was within enumeration district no. 19 in the Old Artillery Grounds.  A description of the district begins:  "Part of the Liberty of Old Artillery Grounds.  Comprising No. 29 Spital Square and the Adjoining houses eastwards:  Fort Street, Duke Street, as far as Brushfield Street..."  Occupant at 22 Fort St. in 1891 is Archibald BRYAN and his family.
    
    In the 1901 census, the same territory came under the Spitalfields sub-district.
    
    "What is fairly recent is the disappearance of a recognisable Jewish community from the East End. The successive waves of immigration, which reached their height in the late 19th and early 20th centuries following persecution in Eastern Europe, saw a lot of schools, shops, businesses and synagogues being built in the East End. But with the cockney diaspora following World War II much of that is fading fast.
    
    "Attempting to remind us of what is (and was) there is Exploring the vanishing Jewish East End, a brace of walks and an accompanying booklet by lawyer and tour guide Clive Bettington. Available in local libraries it not only promises some fascinating walks around the borough, but gives you a chance to see some of the landmarks before it’s too late. Dramatic words? Well consider the fact that before the Second World War there were more than 150 synagogues in the East End. Now there are only four, all of them at risk."
    
    A foreword by celebrated writer, actor and Jewish East Ender Steven Berkoff leads us into Walk 1 – Aldgate to Whitechapel Library and dubbed ‘Artists, Cigarmakers and Markets’. St Botolph’s Aldgate was the traditional home for Jewish settlers in the City. Almost all its Alderman since 1840 have been Jewish, and the ward is home to Bevis Marks Synagogue and the Sandy’s Row Synagogue (one of the four still active), the original Jews Free School and the beautifully decorated Jewish Soup Kitchen for the Poor – now, almost inevitably, an expensive apartment block. The Princelet Street Synagogue, famous as the home of ‘Rodinsky’s Room’ is on your route, as is the Brick Lane Mosque – once a synagogue, before that a Methodist chapel and first a Huguenot church.
    
    The Stepney Green Jewish School is typical of many of the East End’s Jewish institutions. Faced with the drifting away of the community after the Second World War, the school didn’t close – it simply followed them. So the school relocated to Ilford, just as the Jews’ Free School had moved to Camden.
    
    We pass the old homes of famous Jews such as artist Mark Gertler and entertainer Bud Flanagan (born Reuben Weintrop) and the offices of the defunct Jewish Daily News, and arrive at Walk 2 – Aldgate East to Stepney Green or ‘Rabbis, Radicals and the Yiddish Theatre’. Here we pass the point where Oswald Mosley was prevented from reaching Cable Street and its Battle, and the almost hidden Angel Alley with its mural of prominent anarchists – including Kropotkin and Rocker. Further along was the Jewish National Theatre and the ‘Hatton Garden of the East End’ where once traded 18 jewellery shops, almost exclusively Jewish owned.
    
    Fieldgate Street boasts another of the surviving synagogues – a tiny building dwarfed by the giant mosque now beside it. And further along is Rowton House, a doss house where Stalin and Maxim Maximovitch Litvinov (later Stalin’s foreign minister) lived when exiled in the East End. Stop off at Rinkoff’s in O’Leary Square – the East End’s last Jewish bakery, and then you come to ‘The Waste’, where numerous political demonstrations took place at the turn of the 20th century. Theodor Herzl, the father of Zionism, addressed a meeting there in 1898. And Rudolf Rocker, who organised the Jewish workers into unions, held meetings there during the 1912 Tailors’ Strike.
    
    There’s at least one addition we’d make. What about Bloom’s of Whitechapel, that mainstay of East End Jewish cuisine – and boasting some of London’s rudest waiters? Hugely popular during the 1950s and onward, its closure in 1996 symbolised to many the disappearance of the Jewish community from Tower Hamlets.
    
    But there’s a lot of riches here. Some are grand, like the East London Synagogue, some simple – like CH Katz, a shop which sold only string! All are important as remnants of a way of life almost disappeared.

    General background note:
    With a renewal of persecution in Russia in 1881, there was mass immigration from Russia to England. The newcomers settled mostly in urban districts. They virtually created a clothing industry in England. They started Yiddish and Hebrew newspapers, fraternal societies and trade unions. The communal leadership encouraged their Anglicization through participation in English classes, state-aided schools and English clubs and youth movements such as the Jewish Lads Brigade. Many became integrated into the community. The Alien Immigration Act of 1905 restricted immigration, but, by 1914, about 250,000 Jews lived in England.
