    It was apparently Anne's mother's family, the Lauers, who led the way from London, all departing Southampton and arriving by way of Ellis Island.  Some of the Lauers were living in New York's Lower East Side before Anne was born.  Anne's uncle Joseph Lauer was residing at 179 Forsyth St. in the same neighborhood on February 28, 1904, when his father, Anne's maternal grandfather Jacob H. Lauer, arrived on the SS St. Louis.  Jacob was 54 years old, a widower, and a tinsmith by trade.  He was traveling with his 16-year-old daughter Sarah, and they gave Joseph's home as their destination.  On January 20, 1906, Anne's uncle Sollie Lauer arrived on the SS New York and headed for Jacob's home at 243 Stanton St., also on the Lower East Side.   Sollie's wife Celia and their three daughters  followed on April 16, 1906 on the SS Saint Paul.  Next were Anne's father Isaac and her brother Mike, who reached Ellis Island on May 6, 1906 on the SS Phildelphia.  Isaac and Mike gave their destination as the home of Jacob H. Lauer, at 328 N. 5th St. in Brooklyn, probably just across the Williamsburg Bridge, which opened to horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and pedestrians in December 1903.  (See period photo below left, of the nearby intersection of N. 7th St. and Havemeyer.  Privately-owned railway companies began to run elevated trains across the Williamsburg Bridge in 1905 or 1908; accounts differ. )  By summer 1906, Isaac and Mike had established themselves back on the Lower East Side, at 243-5 Stanton St. - which became the first American address for Anne, her brother Louis, and her mother Fannie.  (None of these buildings survives today.)  The family was reunited with Fannie and the children's arrival at Ellis Island on the SS St. Louis on July 29, 1906.  Anne was two years old.  Anne's grandfather, the Lauer family patriarch, was living in a tenement at 306 Riverdale Ave. in Brooklyn when he passed away on January 30, 1918.
