Leverett Hudson EVANS

Leverett Hudson was born on March 2nd, 1817 in South Carolina.¹ Leverett Hudson's father was Daniel M. Sr. EVANS and his mother was Nancy WRENN. His maternal grandparents are Bates Sr. WRENN and Nancy BARLOW. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Daniel M. Jr., Bobbit, Edmon, James C., Lurana Matilda, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Frances, Elizabeth, Nancy A. Tabitha and Hezycirah. He died at the age of 69 in 1886 in Winston County, Alabama. His burial was in Hadder Cemetery, Winston County, Alabama.²

  per Earl EVANS: Leverett H C EVANS was born on March 2, 1817 in Edgefield Co, SC. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Carroll Co, GA #188. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Heard Co, GA p36. He served in the military on May 2, 1864 in Co H 1st Reg't (Fannin's) GA Reserves. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Heard Co, GA p78 #569-542. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Winston Co, AL. He died in 1886.
  
  Earl EVANS to CMB 6/06:
  My grandfather was George Milton Evans, son of Leverett and Sarah. He was born 1866 in Heard County, Georgia and was about 4 when the family moved to Winston County, Alabama. Heard County is next to the Alabama line about midway north to south. The family moved here about 1870 just after the census was taken so they are listed in 1870 in Heard County. According to [dtr] Sarah Saphronia they moved in two wagons pulled by steers and slept at night in tents. The move took two weeks. Heard County is gently rolling land and Winston County is very mountainous; quite a difference in the two locales. Leverette panned gold while in Heard County. The gold field there is about 60 miles wide and goes all the way through Atlanta and into North Georgia where there is a place where tourists pan for gold. While Leverette died in 1886 the Evans estate was not settled until after Sarah died in 1899 By this time George Milton was the only male descendant left in Alabama so he had to settle the estate. In tracing family history I found Evans cousins spread far and wide. There are many in Arkansas where they have a reunion each June but this year I will not make it. So far I have been to it every year but one since 1980. We have a great time there. There are Evans cousins in the Los Angeles area as well as Sacramento and some have at times been in San Francisco.
  
  The Hadder Cemetery in Winston County is where Leverett settled when he came to Winston County. He later moved south a couple of miles. George Milton was the only male Evans with descendants left in Winston County. All his brothers moved to Arkansas and Texas. Some of his sisters stayed with their families in western Winston County and one on them in Cullman County. Many of their descendants live in north western Alabama counties.
  
  The only Evans' I know of in Winston County (our kin) are in the southeastern part of the county and are buried in either the Hadder Cemetery or in the Arley (Mt. Hope) Cemetery. There were other Evans in Winston but I do not know who they are and as far as I have been able to learn are not related to us. Evans is a Welsh name and there were many, many Evans emigrants to this country beginning very early.
  
  Leverett had one son (Jacob) born in South Carolina in 1838. The family said he went into the Confederate Army and never came back. I have not been able to locate anything on him and he was not with the family in 1860. I assume he must have been married by this time. Leverette was a Corporal in the Confederate Army but did not go in until 1864 and he was in his mid forties at this time.
  
  I went to both Heard and Carroll Counties looking for records in the 1960's only to find that court houses in both counties had burned in the 1890's. There were no Evans listings I could find in the phone directories of
  the area at that time.
