    Mrs. Spaulding [sic] Funeral Today
       Mrs. Della M. Spaulding, age 77 years, widow of George L. Spaulding, for many years residents of Loogootee, was found dead in her bed at the home of a daughter, Mrs. George Walker, near St. Michaels early Monday morning.  Mrs. Spaulding had been in poor health for some time, suffering from a complication of ailments, and had severe attacks of asthma during the past few weeks and her death was not wholly unexpected.
       The deceased was born in Orange county Nov. 14, 1855.  She was married to Mr. Spaulding June 20, 1877.  Surviving children are Mrs. Joseph Doyle and Warren C. Spaulding of Indianapolis and Mrs. Walker.
       The funeral service was held at 9:00 o'clock this (Thursday) morning from St. Michael's church with burial following in St. Mary's cemetery.

    Evansville diocese, Judy Neff:  Mrs. Della Spalding, wife of George Spalding, was baptized 7 October 1878 at St. Mary, Barr Township.
    
    According to grandson John George WALKER, Della CHAMPLIN was a descendant of "Pokahanest? which is Indian."  Note that Della's WISE forebears go back to Accomack Cty, VA, once part of Powhatan Confederacy headed by Pocahontas' father.  Della's brother Albert died on Creek Nation lands, but that is apparently because he migrated to OK during the land rush.
    
    Apropos of nothing:  note following grave in Johnson Cty, IN (directly S of Indianapolis): Johnson-Co's best-known & most unusual grave.
    The historical marker reads:
    
    "Nancy Kerlin BARNETT
    Born May 14, 1793 - Died Dec. 1, 1831
    Married to William BARNETT, Feb 20, 1808.
    He was born Sep 27, 1780, drowned in Ohio River Sep 24, 1854.
    William was the great-great-great-grandson of Pocahontas & John ROLFE.  Daniel O. DOTY, 1846-1934, protected his grandmother's grave by
    staying here with his gun, while the county relocated this cemetery in order to build the road. A concrete slab was placed over the grave, to protect the marker, Aug 8, 1912."
    
    directions:
    Take 400S (one road south of Amity off of 31) east and stay on it until you pass over a creek. The grave is just beyond the creek. The grave belong to the wife of a grandson of Pocahontas. I had no idea that her decendants came this far in Indiana. On the historic sign there is a story about her grandson guarding her grave with a rifle.
