    When my sister Florence and brother Arthur graduated from high school,
    she wanted to go "away" to college to study social work.  It was a different time and my mother must have been afraid of hairy legs and never
    marrying so she wouldn't allow it.  Florence went to Temple University
    for a while but quit because she was bored or something. (The reason
    they graduated together even though he was two years older was because
    she was a very good student and was skipped 4 grades)  He wanted to be an engineer.  Jewish men could not find employment in engineering in those days and again my parents resisted.

    U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service, Petition for Naturalization, No. 56696, [upper right corner of page:] 190.  The Honorable the District Court of the United States for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania:  The petition of Jacob Bulkin, hereby filed, respectfully showeth:  First.  My place of residence is 214 So. 59th St., Philadelphia, Pa.  Second.  My occupation is Manufacturer.  Third.  I was born on the 10 day of March, anno Domini 1889 at Rujistiv [sic] Russia.  Fourth.  I emigrated to the United States from Lpool [sic] England on or about the 14 day of January, anno Domini 1910 and arrived in the United States at the port of Phila, on the 1 day of Feb, anno Domini 1910 on the vessel Merion.  Fifth, I declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States on the 28 day of Sept, anno Domini 1916, at Phila Pa in the Dist court of US.  Sixth.  I am married.  My wife's name is Anna.  She was born on the 22 day of Nov, anno Domini [not indicated] at Kiev, Russia and now resides with me [etc.]  I have 2 children, and the name, date and place of birth, and place of residence of each of said children is as follows:  Archie Mar 15 1916 Phila, Florence Dec 29 1919 do, with me.  [etc.] (signed) Jacob Bulkin, Declaration of Intention No. 31152 and Certificate of Arrival No. [inserted:] not given from Department of Labor filed this 26 day of Oct 1922.  Witnesses:  Morris Bulkin, occupation Mfr, residing at 5912 Chancellor, Philadelphia, Pa. and Charles Bellok [sic; signature reads "Bellak"], occupation Presser, residing at 1343 So 6 St, Philadelphia, Pa.

Russia, f/m b. Russia, spoke Yiddish in home before arriving in U.S., yr of arrival 1900, status is alien (not a citzen), able to read/write, and two children, both b. PA:  son Archie 3, and dtr Florence 1.  Neighbors include a J. A./Eva ROSENFELD 42/30 Russia/Russia, yr of arrival 1890.  Most neighbors also hail from Russia and spoke Yiddish.  Note that (cousin) Samuel (Simon) BULKIN was also in Philadelphia at this date.
