    daughter Wallis to CMB 4/06:  So, my father rented a store on Chestnut Street for the two of them and
    completely stocked it.  He signed a pretty long lease and the rent was
    $1,000 a month.  Quite a princely sum in those days.  They didn't like
    the store and abandoned it!
    
    My father got lucky and the landlord asked him to relinquish the lease
    as someone wanted the entire building for a store  Boy, was he relieved.
    
    daughter Wallis to CMB 1/06:  I don't know exactly when the family moved to 2442 North 54th Street.  It is the address into which I was born and may have been also where my brother Carl was also born.  I was born in 37, he 27.  This is not anywhere near the original neighborhood they lived in
    when first married and possibly where my oldest brother Archie was
    born.  He was 20 when I was born.
    
    They, my parents, lived in another home in the above neighborhood.  It
    was on Gainer Road.  Prior to that they lived in what was probably Philadelphia's equivalent to New York's lower east side.  My mother told me that my maternal grandparents had a large home and rented space to my
    father and that my Aunt Esther also lived there.  She became engaged to
    Morris Gold, who came from New York, while living there.
    
    Esther (Bulkin) Gold is listed on the census you sent me.  Unfortunately the children listed on that census died.  However, I do have a cousin (Esther's only remaining living child) who, last I heard lives in the Virginia area near Washington.  He is or was (perhaps he is retired now) working at the Pentagon.  Wilma would know much more about him than I.
    
    Wallis to CMB 3/06:
    My father rented (unfortunately he didn't buy) a five story store on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.  I think the address was 1226.  He sublet the ground floor to a beautiful hat shop and at another time to a bridal salon.  The subleted stores had one side of the deep windows that let to the entrance and my father use the other for himself.
    
    The second floor was for his retail operation where he sold his own as well as other manufacturer's goods.  It was very high priced stuff!  He made patterns for other manufacturer's in exchange for goods sometimes. 
    He sold coats and suits, no dresses.  At one time he gave the third floor to my sister for a dress shop of her own.  Her interest apparently wasn't too strong!
    
    The fourth floor was the workrooms, where he worked and among the other men was my Uncle Morris Gold.  Unfortunately, I was the only child who thought the whole thing was terrific, and I do believe had he lived
    longer I might have ended up "in the business".
    
    granddaughter Susan Bulkin 1/06:  My Dad was "Archie"...the 3 year old child written about in all of your writings. Jacob Bulkin was my Grandfather and was my Dad's Father, a most talented and successful Clothier and Women's Coat and Suit Manufacturer and Tailor in Philly.

    More on the SS Merion:
    
    MERION / TIGER 1901
    The MERION was a 11,621 gross ton ship, length 530.5ft x beam 59.2ft, one funnel, four masts, twin screw and a speed of 14 knots. There was accommodation for 150-2nd and 1,700-3rd class passengers. Built by John Brown & Co Ltd, Glasgow, she was launched for the American Line on 26th Nov.1901. Chartered to the Dominion Line, she started her maiden voyage on 8th Mar.1902 when she left Liverpool for Boston. Her eleventh and last voyage on this service started on 5th Mar.1903 and she commenced her first sailing for the American Line in April 1903 between Liverpool and Philadelphia. On 30th Mar.1903 she was damaged in collision with the British ship CLAN GRANT off Tuskar Rock but was repaired. She started a single round voyage under charter to the Red Star Line on 16th Nov.1907 between Antwep and New York and on 31st Oct.1914 commenced her last Liverpool - Philadelphia sailing. Sold to the British Admiralty in 1914, she was disguised as the Battlecruiser HMS TIGER and on 30th May 1915 was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine UB.8 in the Aegean Sea.     1900 census for Fall Creek Twp, Henry Cty, IN has an entry indexed as Samuel J. BULKIN, but on the record itself the surname is clearly written as BUFKIN.  Samuel was b. Jun 1874 IN, f/m b. IN.  No evidence of connection to Russia.
    
    Lastly from 1900, from Preston Twp, Wayne Cty, PA, there is an entry indexed as Will BULKIN, the "adopted boy" of David and Kate "M LAUGHLIN."  Will is age 19, b. Apr 1881 NY, f/m b. Ireland/NY.  (cf. David/Mary, b. PA/NY, all parents b. Ireland)  On the record itself, Will's name appears to be written as RULKIN.  No evidence of a connection to Russia.
