    When Mathias was born in 1653, the Treaty of Westphalia was five years old.  Under that treaty, Spain recognized the independence of the United Provinces of the north but retained control of Flanders; nonetheless, French king Louis XIV harbored designs on the territory.
    
    Mathias' move to Bellem in 1694 may have been influenced in part by French incursions into Flemish territory.  He survived the 1701-1713 War of the Spanish Succession and lived the last 13 years of his life under the Holy Roman Empire, which took control of Belgium at the end of that war.
