    Petrus was probably born before 1630, at a time when Spain controlled Flanders.  In the previous 100 years, Brussels had become the capital of the Spanish Netherlands (1531), Mercator had drawn the first map of Flanders (1541), and thousands of Protestants had fled the Low Countries as a result of the Spanish Inquisition there.  The House of Orange also established an independent Netherlands in the north (1579), and with the subsequent departure of many artisans and merchants  from Antwerp, Amsterdam assumed a new role as Europe's principal center of trade.  Spain and France continued to struggle for control of Flanders until the end of the 1600's.
