Ellen's father was Samuel Steen [1865-Ballinrees;1901-LowerBalteagh;1925-Ardvarness/Ballywilliam] Claments and her mother was Annabella McKeown.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel [1854-Altibrian;1865-Ballinrees;Dunalis-1868;1885-Ballystrone;] Clements and Jane [1854-Ballystrone;1897-Ballinteer] Finlay; her maternal grandparents were James  McKeown and Ellenor "Ellen" Gibson. She had six brothers and two sisters, named James, Samuel, John, Anna, David, Sarah, Mary Jane and Martha.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
