John was born on November 13th, 1867. John's father was John [Cullycapple] Boyd and his mother was Jane McAlister.  His paternal grandparents were Kennedy [Killeague] Boyd and Mary Hunter. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Kennedy, Alexander, Richard, Alfred, Margaret, Mary and Mary.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
