John's father was John Boyd Jnr and his mother was Margaret Blair.  His paternal grandparents were John Boyd and "Malsey" Gage. He had a brother and five sisters, named Samuel, Mary, Rachel, Margaret, Eliza and Jane.  He died at the age of 21 on June 15th, 1868.
