William's father was James Towers and his mother was Annabella Ferguson.  His paternal grandparents were William Tours and Janet Fulton. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Margaret, Janet and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died due to kidney failure, Chronic nephritis, cardiac hypertrophy, at the age of 69 on February 21st, 1896 in Paisley.  He was buried in Paisley.^3 4
