James Rennie

James was born in January 1841 in Dundee.¹²

  Died aged 44, at 20 Tower Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow, so born probably in January 1841

James' father was Alexander Rennie and his mother was Janet Ross. His paternal grandparents were James Rennie and Janet Stronach; his maternal grandparents were James Ross and <Unknown>. He had a brother and two sisters, named David, Jessie and Euphemia. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Peter and Anne. He died due to a medical problem, Influx of brain, peritonitis, duration 5 days, at the age of 44 on January 17th, 1885 in Glasgow.³

  From 1863 his occupation was Sapper for Royal Engineers. He retired in 1883.⁹

    - Enlisted 1863, deserted 1865, returned 1868, finally discharged through ill-health in 1883.
  His occupation was Boiler Maker's Labourer and "on Army Pension" in manufacturing. He died in 1885 while still employed there.³

      In 1861, while living with his uncle Peter in Glasgow, another uncle, David, was living next door to a sapper in the Royal Engineers. This may well have given James the idea to enlist.
  He lived in Edinburgh until August 1863.⁷
