George was born on October 1st, 1784 in St. Cuthbert's parish and his baptism took place there. George's father was George Paterson and his mother was Christian Philp.  His maternal grandparents were George Philp and Margaret Finlayson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Theophilus, James, David, Robert, Robert, Margaret and Christian.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
