Mary was born on December 8th, 1825 in Kilbrandon-Kilchattan. Mary's father was Colin McKay and her mother was Margaret McQueen.  Her maternal grandparents were John McQueen and Mary Connell. She had two brothers and a sister, named Colin, Peter and Ann.  She was the youngest of the four children.
