Charles' father was Charles MacGowan and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Howie Galt. His maternal grandparents were Robert Galt and Isabella Drummond. He had two sisters named Isabella and Jessie. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 1 in 1906 in Glasgow.
