William's father was John Hill and his mother was Jennet Bell.  His paternal grandparents were James Hill and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were John Bell and Elspeth Ramsay. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Charles, James, Margaret, Anna, Jannet and Elspeth.
