Robert's father was Robert Galt and his mother was Isabella Drummond. His maternal grandparents were Michael Drummond and Isabella Dunn. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Gabriel, William, John, James, Isabella, Maggie and Isabella. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 20 on October 8th, 1894 in Gorbals.
