Robert's father was David Dick and his mother was Janet Grant. He had two brothers and four sisters, named George, Peter, Isabell, Janet, Jean and Ann. He was the second oldest of the seven children. He died due to a medical problem, cerebral congestion, duration 8 days, at the age of 74 on September 29th, 1877 in Mid Calder.¹
