Edward's father was Edward Cunninghame and his mother was Jannet Hill.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Cunninghame and Margaret Godrell; his maternal grandparents were John Hill and Jennet Bell. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, James, George, Margaret, Jannet, Catharen, Hellen and Jean.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
