Thomas' father was Joseph Chalmers and his mother was Isabella Gray. His maternal grandparents were John Gray and Jean Reid. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Alexander, Jane, Mary, Agnes and Mary. He died at the age of 1 in 1862 in Ayr.
