Dalrymple's father was Dalrymple Bowman and his mother was Annie Lawson. His paternal grandparents were Dalrymple Bowman and Jane Taylor. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Dalrymple, Mary, Jane and Margaret. He was the oldest of the six children. He died in an accident or as a result of an injury, drowning, at the age of 3 on May 9th, 1891 in Galston.
