William's father was John Bookless and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Nicol Henderson. His maternal grandparents were William Henderson and Isabel Nichol. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Matthew, Isabella, Isabella, Agnes and Maggie. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 82 in 1980 in Uphall.
