Robert's father was Robert Allan and his mother was Catherine (Kate) Hamilton. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and Mary Ann Gray. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, David and Mary. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 86 in 1989 in Renfrew.
