Janet's father was James Bruce and her mother was Mary Dundas. Her paternal grandparents were David Hay-Bruce and Marion Graham; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Dundas (of Findask) and Lady Janet Maitland. She had two brothers named Robert and James. She was the second oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 49 on July 14th, 1827.
