Julius' father was Johann Baptist Joseph von Sauer and his mother was Theresia Brandstätter. His paternal grandparents were Johann Anton von Sauer and Elisabeth Egger. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Rudolf, Moritz, Hans, Fanny and Marianne. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Julius. He died at the age of 27 on March 9th, 1891 in Marburg.¹
