James was born on September 9th, 1854 in Sunbury, Frontenac, On Canada.  James' father was Simeon SPOONER and his mother was Elizabeth SMYTHE. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Cornelius, Henry, Alexander, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named George, Sarah, Clarinda, Emily, Margaret and Pearl.
