Robert (Bert) Boyd HEYLAND

Robert, known as Bert, was born on March 6th, 1880 in Sarnia, Lambton Cty., ON Canada. Bert's father was John Thomas HEYLAND and his mother was Emily A. HOOPER. His paternal grandparents were John H. HIGHLAND and Letitia KENNY; his maternal grandparents were Richard HOOPER and Jane. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Bill, Penn, Frank Merle, Leila and Lottie. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 50 on May 17th, 1930 in Calgary, AB Canada. His burial was on May 19th, 1930 in Claresholm, AB Canada.¹

  Other information is that he is a lodger in a house with 10 people of which a Louis Noll is described as the head. Robert is single, b. Mar. 6, 1880, Canadian, rel: Baptist, at the time working as a R.R. Sec. Labourer (which I take to mean railroad section labourer). He was working there for the last 12 months and made a total of $450. Can read, write and speak English which is his mother tongue.

  Chinese labourers were paid $1.00 per day for their labour, while white labourers received between $1.50 and $2.50 per day (Chinese Canadian National Council, 2010). Furthermore, Chinese labourers were required to purchase their own camping and cooking gear while working on the railway, while white labourers had these essentials provided to them free of charge. Since many of the Chinese labourers could not afford this gear due to their low wages, many died from scurvy when the winter season came, as they were ill-prepared to deal with the frigid temperatures and conditions (Chinese Canadian National Council, 2010).
