Fanny was born in 1837 in Hanford, Staffordshire.1   Fanny's father was John Lowndes and her mother was Mary Dawson.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Dawson and Charlotte Dawson. She had three brothers and two sisters, named George, John, Henry, Jane and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
