George was born in 1901 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.1   George's father was Joesph F Cholerton and his mother was Mary Ann F Lowndes.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Lowndes and Elizabeth Straw. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Walter, Frederick, Harriet, Ivy and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the six children.
