Thomas Payton, one of the well-to-do and enterprising agriculturists of Greene Township, Parke County, owns a substantial residence, which he erected at a cost of about $3,000 on his fine farm, which is situated on Section 21. He is engaged in missed farming, keeps a first-class variety of stock of all kinds, raises thorough-bred Poland-China hogs, and has some very good horses. Mr. Payton is much interested in the success of the Democratic Party, has filled the office of Committeeman of the township, and has been a delegate to the state, and also to Congressional conventions. Thomas Payton was educated in the public schools of Parke County, where his birth occurred on the 12th of May 1832. He lived with his father until his marriage, on May 6, 1852, with Miss Martha Ann Stout, who was born in Kentucky September 12, 1833. Her father, James Stout, emigrated to this state form the Blue Grass region in 1834, locating in Union Township, where he resided until his death in May 1889. He entered land of the Government, opened up a farm, and in time became the owner of several hundred acres. His wife was formerly Rhoda Maddox, and by her marriage she became the mother of seven children. Those living are Mrs. Payton; Mary Jane Connolly, who lives in Union Township; William P. and James O., who live in the same place; Sara E., deceased; and Rebecca F., Mrs. John A. Rush, who lives in Iowa. After his marriage, Mr. Payton located in Union Township, where he rented land for five years, and then purchased one hundred acres in the same township. This was in 1858 and he at once moved to the farm on which he lived for seven years, then removing to his present farm. At first he owned one hundred and twenty acres of this place, to which in 1875 he added fifty acres more. For about thirty years he has been engaged in carrying on this farm, which is now one of the most desirable in the township. Mr. Payton is a man of considerable mechanical genius, and in August 1891, he constructed an appliance that, by means of a hydraulic ram and tanks, furnishes water for his stock in all parts of the farm. The pleasant home of the Payton family is one of the best in the county, and, unlike the usual residences of farmers, is thoroughly warmed in all parts of the building during the winter season. Mr. Payton is a member of the Predestinarian Baptist Church, attending Mount Moriah Chapel, to which his wife also belongs. He is quite a musician and leads the singing of the choir. It is safe to say that few men in this region are more honored and respected than is the gentleman of whom this is a brief life record.

He was the recipient of 156 cards, for which he feels very grateful. The day was made still more memorable by Mrs. George McMurtry, the daughter with whom he makes his home, inviting a few of his older neighbors to take dinner with him. There were present: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clark, J. C. Strong, J. S. Clark, and daughter, Miss Mary, his eldest daughter, Mrs. Jacob Collings, and Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Britton and daughter, Miss Carrie."

Samuel Nelson Jarvis, 87 died at his home west of Russellville early on Monday morning. He was the son of Joseph and Rachel Dooley Jarvis and was born on a farm SW of Waveland. He was the last of a family of 5 children. He leaves a widow, Catherine Aker Jarvis. There are four children by his first wife, Nancy Payton Jarvis, now deceased. Claude Jarvis of Crawfordsville; Mrs. Carl Fletcher of Darlington; Mrs. JL Deere and Mrs. MJ Esterbrook of Terre Haute; Four grandchildren and 3 greats. Funeral services were held at the home on Wed. afternoon in charge of Rev. EE Moorman of Bethany, former pastor of the Waveland Christian Church. Burial in Russellville Cemetery. ~1872 James T. Mr. Collings was born in Greene Township and spent all his life there. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Hollandsburg. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Esta Weaver of Terre Haute and Miss Chloe at home, and one son, Guy Collings, of New Ross; also five grand daughters, Mrs. Frances Williams, Mrs. Nellie Edwards, Mrs. Blanche Weatherford of Tuscola, Ill., Miss Freda Collings of New Ross and Miss Alberta Collings who resided with him, and two great grandchildren.  The funeral was held at Mt. Moriah Church, Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. S. G. Smith of Ladoga, officiating. Burial in the cemetery near the church."

DEATH: Waveland Independent, March 31, 1922 -- Mrs. Jacob Collings died at her home (Parkville) Sunday morning about one o'clock. Death was due to pneumonia. Funeral services were held at Mt. BIOGRAPHY: Clipping pasted into a Siegel Cooper Company Fall & Winter Catalogue 1906 + by Cloe Collings Myers  A piano recital was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Collings of near Parkeville Saturday afternoon July 23, where their daughter, Miss Cloe and her class in music rendered some well prepared solos and duets. Mr. Upp was there with his camera and photographed the class and teacher, after which they and about 25 invited guests were treated to ice cream and cake and fruit salad. All departed at a late hour declaring they had spent a most enjoyable evening.

Remained unmarried until late in life, and until that time when she was no longer able to care for herself, she lived on the farm.  In addition to caring For her elderly parents, Cloe took in her brother Byard Guy Collings’ one-year old daughter, Naomi Alberta ("Alberta") after Byard Guy’s wife, Claudiea Cleo Hazlet Collings died. About five years later, in 1922, another of Byard Guy’s daughters, Edith Blanche, came to stay with Cloe to attend school with Alberta.

Cloe was an active member in the Parkville Christian Church and the social life around it. She gave piano lessons to bring in extra money for the growing family. Cloe married her “childhood” sweet heart, Robert Myers, when she was 65 years old. Family stories relate that Cloe was smitten with Bob when they were young, but that her parents didn’t approve of the relationship and forbade her from seeing him. The young couple apparently did manage to secretly meet for double dates when Cloe was supposed to be acting as chaperon for other couples, but with the strong disapproval of Cloe’s parents the relationship could not continue. Bob went away, married and had children.  In 1953 he returned to Parke County, visited Cloe, and they were soon married. Cloe was 65 and Bob was 77 years old.

Cloe’s house was warm and welcoming. Family potluck dinners were a regular occurrence.  Cloe’s contribution usually included a fresh chicken, carrot salad, picked beets, and the world’s best sugar cookies. Cloe often treated the family to a short piano recital at these gatherings .Even as Cloe’s fingers became arthritic and the piano out of tune, her family enjoyed hearing Cloe play.  1857 - 1946 Alice Massie DENMAN 88 88 BIOGRAPHY: 1930 census: Parents from Indiana.
DEATH: Obituary in Crawfordsville Journal Review 26-Jan-1946 (p.5, col. 5)  1887 - 1907 Fred Earl PAYTON 19 19 DEATH: DIED - Sept 30, Fred Peyton, after an illness of two months of typhoid fever, resulting in congestion of the lungs. He came home sick while in the employ as bookeeper of Vaughn & Casey of Crawfordsville. He was the oldest son of Wm. and Alice Peyton age 19 years 10 months 15 days. He leaves his father, mother, two brothers and three sisters and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services by Revs. Collings and Whitlock at Mt. Moriah church Tuesday. Interment in the new cemetery nearby.
