His paternal grandparents were Anthony PAYTON and Margaret WALLINGFORD. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named William Harvey, George Washington, John A., Ora Whaley, James T., Omer Tilden, LaFollette, Mary Frances, Sarah Jane, Nancy Alice and Rhoda Ellen.
