Barbara was born in 1825 in Edinburgh.1  Barbara's father was Sir Thomas Bradford and her mother was Mary Ann Atkinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Bradford and Elizabeth Otter. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Ralph, Elizabeth and Georgiana.  She was the youngest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Charles and Mary.
