Charles' father was Charles Philip Ainslie and his mother was Mary Ann Atkinson. His paternal grandparents were Sir Philip Ainslie and Elizabeth Gray. He had a sister named Mary. He was the older of the two children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Ralph, Elizabeth, Georgiana and Barbara. He died at the age of 81 in 1889.
