Emily was born in 1849 in Ipswich, Suffolk.1  Emily's father was Thomas Webb and her mother was Emily Friston.  Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Webb and Sarah Spurling; her maternal grandparents were William Friston and <Unknown>. She had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Thomas, Edward and Sarah.  She was the youngest of the five children.
