Mary was born in 1837 in Sible Hedingham, Essex and her baptism took place there in May 1837.1 2  Mary's father was Robert Ward and her mother was Lydia Everett.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Ward and Elizabeth Winch; her maternal grandparents were William Everett and Mary Argent. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William, Jane and Sarah.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
