George was born on April 2nd, 1812 in Petworth, Sussex and his baptism took place there on April 24th, 1812.1  George's father was William Steer and his mother was Anne Merriott.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Osborn. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas, James and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
