William was born in 1781 and his baptism took place on July 29th, 1781 in Petworth.1  William's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Jane Osborn.  His paternal grandparents were John Steer and Sarah Strudwick.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 72 in 1853.  The funeral took place on December 7th, 1853 in Petworth.2
