Ernest was born in 1880 in New Mills Derbyshire.1  Ernest's father was James Bowden Redfern and his mother was Alice Bates.  His paternal grandparents were George A Redfern and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were John Bates and Grace Waterhouse. He had three brothers named John, James and Harold.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 4 in 1884.2
