James was born in 1843 in New Mills.1  James' father was George A Redfern and his mother was Elizabeth. He had a brother and a sister, named Alfred and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three children.

James and Alice were married.  They had four sons named John, Ernest, James and Harold.
