Robert was born in 1861.1  Robert's father was John Ashcroft Leslie and his mother was Mary Fairbairns.  His paternal grandparents were John Leslie and Elizabeth ?Ashcroft; his maternal grandparents were Robert Fairbourne and Isabella Harley. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Edith.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
