His paternal grandparents were Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Rooi Dirk, Christiaan, Johan, Izak, Jan, name?, Jacobus, Theofilus, Anna, Hester, Maria and Dorothea.-
