Jan was born on August 16th, 1908 in Lydenburg.1   Jan's father was Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and his mother was Maria Magdalena Hougaard.  His paternal grandparents were Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Rooi Dirk, Christiaan, Johan, Pieter, Izak, name?, Jacobus, Theofilus, Anna, Hester, Maria and Dorothea.  He died at the age of 82 on October 15th, 1990.  He was buried in Stellenbosch, Onderpappagaai.2

‌Jan and Helena were married.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Dirk, Hougaard and Ingrid.
