Pieter, known as Ben, was born on November 8th, 1863 in Tulbagh.  Ben's father was Hendrik Pieter Winterbach and his mother was Sara Adriana du Plessis.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes Carel Winterbach and Dorethea Elizabetha Theron; his maternal grandparents are Jan Abraham du Plessis and Catharina Susanna Malherbe. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Johannes, Tobias, Dirk, Attie, Sarie and Maria. He had a half-brother named Hendrik.  He died from cancer, Prostate, at the age of 70 on November 17th, 1933 in Drogefontein, Distrik Merweville.  He was buried in Jakkalsfontein.1
