Anna was born on January 28th, 1885. Anna's father was Jacobus (Koos) Petrus Johannes Winterbach and her mother was Christina Willemina Hougaard. Her paternal grandparents were Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. She had two brothers and a sister, named Dirk, Chris and Hester. She was the oldest of the four children.-
