George was born on March 6th, 1828.  George's father was Valentine Jefferson Butcher  and his mother was Maryann Margaret Teter. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Isaac, Henry, William, Valentine, James, Delilah, Louisa, Alcinca, Sarah, Elizabeth and Julia.  He was the seventh oldest of the twelve children.
